Arts for Haiti: Earthquake Relief Benefit

Pierre Paul Art Gallery owner Lee Jean-Gilles, has always identified himself as being from two worlds. Born in Port-au-Prince, Lee and his family moved to the United States when he was 4 years old and settled in Ann Arbor. In his formative years, he was educated in American schools and immersed in American culture, but at home his Haitian roots were firmly planted. The family ate Haitian food, played Haitian music, and spoke both French and Creole at home. His father lovingly spoke of the Haitian art collection he had been forced to leave in Haiti. He took Lee to galleries to see the art of his homeland. These experiences inspired Lee in his career path and this gallery is named in his father’s honor.

In the wake of the terrible earthquake, Lee was distraught as he tried, unsuccessfully, to reach his family. After four torturous days, he finally heard from his brother Wesner and sister Altagrace.

“My family has been doubly-blessed.” Lee said. “First and most importantly, they are all well and unharmed. Second, my family home of over 80 years was spared any major damage. I feel an overwhelming desire to give back to the country of my birth.”

Lee and his family are giving back, making available their family home to the Arts for Haiti Foundation.  Additionally, Lee decided to sell this collection of art he purchased directly from these emerging artists in Haiti  last October. 50% of all proceeds from this collection will go into a fund to start the Arts for Haiti Foundation. Arts for Haiti will be based and run in Ann Arbor, but will operate a school in Port-au-Prince for promising Haitian artists. This school will provide basic needs for the artists and their families.
